I had a great visit with the fifth and sixth grade students at Pacific Intermediate (about 500 students altogether). We did some math using strips of paper and showed that math is more than just numbers. We discussed how math is all around us, in nature, animals, art, weather, the stars, and music. Both groups of students had great questions about writing and publishing books, where I get my ideas, who inspired me to write, and whether I preferred to write or do math.
